Who are you and what do you do for a living?
I’m Sam Wilcoxon, the CEO and co-founder of a startup called Lorem based in New York City. We built a new, on-demand marketplace to connect business owners with freelancers who can help them setup and customize WordPress, Shopify, MailChimp, and 100’s of other popular software tools they use on a daily basis.
What's your morning routine like?
Just sitting down to answer these questions this morning after running a lap around Prospect Park and pouring myself a large bowl of Fruit Loops. My morning routine involves knocking out a few emails, breakfast, and reading a book during my commute on the subway from Brooklyn to our office in Manhattan (currently reading “Sapiens” by Yuval Noah Harari).
What's a typical day at work like for you?
We like schedule all our team meetings for the week on Monday, so that we can hustle the rest of the week and know we’re all pointed in the same direction. As a busy founder, I try to use business hours during the day to focus on solving whatever is our top priority on “the critical path.” I try to save responding to (or even looking at) emails and all the other “busy work” for during breakfast or after dinner to maximize productivity.
What do you do when you're not working?
Sports and food! I play on handful of soccer teams around the city, am training for the Chicago marathon, and love listening to a podcast while cooking dinner. New York City may have some of the best food in the world, but it’s hard to beat the “everything I bought at Trader Joe’s” stir-fry.
What does your office and desk look like?
My co-founder Charlie’s secret hobby is painting, so our office’s design aesthetic has always been important to us. I think we are the first team in history to bring their own set of desk chairs & lamps to a WeWork coworking space… My desk is covered in 9.5x11 pieces of printer paper with drawings, notes, and crazy ideas.
What challenges do you often run into when you're working?
Managing a team is one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a founder. You have to step back from just selfishly thinking about you can be more productive to thinking about how you can maximize team productivity (and happiness!). But it’s totally worth it — there’s only one of you and when you hire the best people they’re better at everything than you anyways.
Do you have any good productivity tips?
For maximum focus, I like to turn off Slack, hide my phone, and turn on “do not disturb” mode on my laptop in order to eliminate digital distractions. Also like to throw on a pair of headphones (even though I’m not listening to music) to mentally trick myself to focus.
What tools do you use at work to be productive?
We use a handful of products like Slack, Trello, Google Drive, and GitHub to keep us moving fast. We also rally the team around our main KPI and write it up on the whiteboard everyday to make sure decisions are made in line with growing that number.
How do you get inspiration to get up in the morning and kick ass?
Charlie, the team, and I have been working hard on this product for the past 2 years and don’t want to lose any of the momentum we’ve fought so hard to earn. The big vision we have for Lorem and the thousands of business owners and freelancers who we’ve helped along the way get me jumping out of bed ready to rock every single morning.
